I am a native of Nevada. I have lived 60 years in this little piece of heaven we call the Great Basin. I have always loved the beauty of the wide open spaces and our version of “Big Sky” country, but what really fascinates me is the “little” spaces; the small springs and oasis areas that define our nature. The areas that feed and water our wild animals and the areas that provide shade for a nap! This “little space”... Read More

On September 28th, my wife and I, as serious amateur photographers, wanted to visit what we call Little Finland near Whitney Pockets. We camped at Whitney Pockets with our camping trailer so that we would be close to Little Finland for an early start the next morning. We wanted to photograph some stars and our campfire lit up the rock formations surrounding the camp site creating a unique look and feel. I wanted to capture the Milky Way and the... Read More

I call her Valentine, a mustang with a heart-shaped mark on her forehead. She roams the Mt. Charleston Wilderness. I met Valentine while taking a predawn trip toward Cold Creek with hopes to see wild horses and elk in the area. She greeted me at sunrise, grazing in the desert below Bonanza Peak. Nevada’s outdoor spaces thrill me. Adventure is limitless and scenic wonders are infinite. As a 25-year Las Vegas local, I’m still in awe of my surroundings. As... Read More

As an avid hiker on BLM lands, I was interested in an exploration of the Muddy Mountains Wilderness in Clark County. Though close to Las Vegas, I had heard that visitation of the area was low. It seemed like my kind of place. Access is somewhat difficult but I was pleased to find excellent exposures of the red, Aztec Sandstone on my hike toward Muddy Peak. These outcrops are essentially fossilized sand dunes from a Sahara-size desert that existed here... Read More

I took the photo because of the intense profusion of wildflowers that bloomed in the area during spring 2013. The time of day offered low-angle sunlight and nearly perfect lighting and contrast conditions. The clouds added to the scene and the illumination of the Sheep Range in the background added to the sense of place. I was attempting to emphasize the contrast between the concept of the dry, brown desert and the unusual occurrence of abundant wildflowers in a place... Read More

The Rainbow Mountain Wilderness is one of my favorite places. This image was taken early in the morning after a winter storm swept through the Red Rock escarpment. The sun was beginning to burn off the low enveloping fog. The outside temperature was below freezing and it was snowing as I packed all my gear to the spot I had in mind near the Oak Creek Trail. As the fog lifted, I was amazed at the grand vista and the... Read More

The photo was taken from the crest of the Sonoma Range, looking north. The Sonoma Range is just south of Winnemucca. It was taken October 31, 2011, so the vegetation was in good fall colors. I was hiking with my daughter, Gretchen Westhoff, who lives in Winnemucca. We enjoy hiking in the beautiful mountains of Nevada. Image Copyright © 2013 John Boehmke – All Rights Reserved.

There are few places in the world as rich in public lands as Nevada. If you see a mountain you want to climb, a rim you want to hunt, a stretch of desert you want to explore, odds are it’s there for the taking. You simply go. This photo of the first light on a sage hen hunt in northern Washoe County just seemed to capture that sense of freedom. Image Copyright © 2013 Scott Mortimore – All Rights Reserved.

The picture is at the entrance to Red Rock National Park, just as the sun was setting and the moon rising. I had moved to Vegas only three weeks prior and was out exploring what Nevada had to offer. I was taken back by the peacefulness the desert had knowing Las Vegas was only minutes away. I now go there periodically with my dog to enjoy the beauty and serenity it provides. I took this particular photo because it showcases one of the many beautiful spring areas in Elko County. One would have to personally experience how breathtaking it is, but I think the picture reflects it to some degree. Image Copyright © 2013 Shanell Owen – All Rights Reserved.
